The weak areas in Long Ashton are the condition and facilities of most of the shops. We consider the only quality shops are the bakery and the chemist. The other shops are in poor condition unbinviting and depressing. You only have to compare these shops with any in other villages. e.g. compare our Co-op with the one in Chew Magna. Chew Magna Co-Op is always well stocked, well presented, clean and withh polite and attentive staff. the whole central area of Long Ashton need to be brought into the 21st century in order to survive. Illegal signs are also a problem. Some retail outlets just keep adding signs without applying for planning permission these do not seem to be regulated and should be. Long Ashton is a good village with many good people, we all need to ensure it does not fall into an unregulated sprawl. I actively avoid Long ashton Post Office. I go to Failand monre than helpful and cheery.

Youth Club: if it is to be extended / run more frequently perhaps it could be run over 2 or 3 different sitesas those who live near the rec wouldn't want youth hanging round evert night of the week. Sufficient places in the village school A similar number of shops but more useful ones eg butchers, fish mongers, greengrocers. Cheaper bus fares , which will lead to fuller buses.

Green belt - could be relaxed in places Welcoming new residents - produce a welcome pack such as that delivered by the parish church Farmers markets should include local farmers to showcase their produce one stop shop - could that be the library and open more? the co-op site + car park should be regenerated / redeveloped could provide a new centre for this end of the village where better new fac ilites are needed to serve the new and growing population

Better local shops including a grocers/general store at the ashton court end of the village. More pushchair accessible footpaths / circular routes in the village + improved footpath up to Gatcombe Farm shop (it gets very narrow). Yoga / aerobics etc classes at the village hall (unless there already is and I haven't realised) A bus lane all the way from the end of the village into Bristol to encourage bus use.

2.08: Bypass noise worse since new surface was laid. What would be highly desirable, but very difficult to achieve, would be an off road parking area adjacent to the central shops.

I would like to see the co-op shut at 8 p.m. every night. This would stop yob element. Also a speed camera near the co-op would greatly reduce the speed of some motorists who clearly do not abide by the limit through the village. I would like to see more community spirit. I would like to see more Christmas decorations, a Christmas tree lit up where the children could gather on Christmas eve and make their last Christmas wishes and maybe the guides could sing carols etc. This village has lost its magic - lets get it back please.

1 The play area by Birdwell School equipped with football nets and play equipment. The children this side of the village have nothing. 2 Stop parents driving into Hollis Close to pick up children from school or nursery. 3 More police. 4 Keeds Hall kept cleaner and the toilets, the place is a mess. 5 More shops e.g supermarket. Stop the hairdressers and estate agents, we have enough 6 Senior school built on the Research Station Land.

We do not feel the Community Police Officer is visible enough within this village. Additionally, on the 2 occasions we have sought his guidance we did not feel this was of any value. It is important to build more smaller local shops in order to maintain a community atmmosphere. With the growing percentage of young families, it would be a good investment to provide additional leisure facilities, again to maintain the community atmosphere.

It would be good to have a proper restaurant in the village. I know you can have 'pub food' but to take someone out for a special occasion means going to Bristol. Also it would be good to have a Waitrose or similar quality supermarket. The Co-op, I'm afraid, doesn't 'cut the mustard'. With these extra 1000? homes in the village, I feel both above points are valid.

Tighter control of drunk young people late at night in the village. Drugs enforcement i.e stop and searching by police, noise, anti-social behaviour controls and enforced. Teenagers or adults that cause damage made to pay for their criminal damage - named and shamed. Better health centre - doctors are useless. Shopping centre - as Nailsea. Good neighbour scheme - keep down noise as new people into the village seem to behave as they please and are not considerate to others.

Speed cameras on both Weston Road and Long Ashton road would be good. I am against the expansion of Bristol airport because of the environment. I don't like gangs of youths hanging around the shops and Rec. We need a local bobby on the beat who would know the people and the trouble makers.

better shops. a cafe to provide a focal point. cycle path to Ashton Court. bus service to Clifotn.

Living in Failand, hear little of village activities. Local speciality shops eg delicatessen, butcher etc

A greengrocer shop needed instead of hairdressers and estate agents.

Clear foliage from footpath between Ridgeway and Long Ashton Road. Cafe and more shops. Village web-site that emails those who sign up with info on village events. Trees planted in streets to green them. North Somerset providing kitchen waste boxes with handles of a size you can easily keep in kitchen.

At time of originally completing this form I felt very safe in Long Ashton. Last night my partner was attcked outside Picolo's fish and pizza shop, and now I am reluctant to use the local shopping facilities. The incident occurred about 10:30 on Sat 25th November. We had been to Twickenham for the day and on our return the taxi dropped him at Picolo's while I continued home. He ordered the food, read the paper while waiting and on leavong someone acused him of laughing at his mate and punched him. He now has cut and swollen lips, and is understandably upset. We have not reported this incident to the police since he cannot give a description of the attackers. My partner is a placid, friendly personand although we had been drinkingthere is no way he would have provoked the attack.

The frontage of the Coop should be changed to improve the area. It is always dirty strewn with litter and often poulated by groups of youths involved in varying degrees of anti-social behaviour. Ther is not enough space between the road and the frontage - but I don't have any suggestions on how it could be improved without the Coop spending a lot of money. This respondent wrote "what about the library?" in response to Q11.10

Definitely a farmer's market. No more estate agents, finance etc, no bookmakers. A café /deli would be welcome for young and old but lively please. Community/volunterr transport for old/disabled people to attend doctors - clubs etc. No mor new build in vast numbers - swampimg the village facilities, doctors surgery/ nurses already over stretched. I do not agree with speed cameras - these are just a police /government fund raiser. Another silent tax. However controls telling people their speed, helps to make people aware. A lot of commuters know where the cameras are and slow down only to go twice as fast after.

Seems a good community Do NOT close off Providence during rush hour, as traffic out of village slow enough already Keep the Greenbelt Co-op needs to improve - lack of competition and choice and expensive

More choice for grocery shopping as Co-op is inadequate, especially for families/those without transport.

More competition between shops as Co-op expensive Better parking and more pedestrian crossings

Bus fairs to Nailsea for school expensive for 2 children Co-op a disgrace - Sainsbury's or Tescos would be better, as they would manage security
tagged with: bus service   shops

Long Ashton is pleasant village to live in. A few 'problem' areas :- speeding traffic on main road, loitering near shops and park. More reasonably priced shops - less car use. Co-op improving, well stocked but bakery expensive. People have to drive to gatcombr Farm Shop or use trecherous pavements by fast road. Could Gatcombe supply fresh produce to Co-op? Cafe/ meeting place would be good for young mums. Parking at Post Office difficult and dangerous. Need signs to Northleaze School. Dog poo is major issue - irresponsible owners at fault.

Facilities for disabled people, especially if they have a mobility scooter. It is impossible to use mobility scooters in LA because it's not disabled friendly. There are not any sloping kerbs. The pavements are very narrow. There should be more shops in the village to cater for disabiled people who cannot travel alone further afield and for the people who have moved into the new housing. Clubs for women on their own or married to make new friends. Seats at bus stops in the village. Disabled parking outside the Doctors. New glasses for drivers in LA because they don't seem to be able to read the speed limits of 30mph. Christmas decorations and lights plus a christmas tree, party for the residents of LA. We live in the dark ages here. Backwell and Nailsea have Xmas lights! Street lights are awful here at night, it is very dark. Cafe in the village to meet daily for a coffee and chat. There is nothing to invite people to come to the village or to stop for if you are driving through. What shops there are are too spread out. Bank, Taxi rank, hardware store, clothes shop, stationers, we need these shops in the village.

would love double yellow lines opposite the entrance to Kings Croft - and also near the doctors' surgery to prevent parking on both sides of the road. There should be a community scheme to get people to park more considerately and to encourage people to use their garages more, not just for storage. The new estate looks like a car park. want more facilities as village grows eg cafe and more shops.

More shops. Feeling safe to go out after dark. A map of village on notice board by Co-op to show where shops, doctor, dentist etc are.

The speed of the traffic through Long Ashton is fine but the sheer volume of it more of a problem. 3.02 (better public Transport prefered) There should be more shops located at hte nailsea end of the village, with adequate customer parking. Parking is problem at the current post office area. Further housing development should be prevented. police present more at night.

Traffic calming and/or restrictions in Providence Lane to improve pedestrian safety. Suitably positioned double yellow lines to prevent use of laybyes by visitors to the pubs or obstruction of the laybyes. Provision of allotments within the village and improve shops to reduce the need to go to Bristol.

Please support existing shops and post office. Additional shops would be most welcome.

Better shops, less beauty places, more shops at the end of the village (Northleaze) A bank would be great and a weekly market even a cinema, which I think may keep the younger ones from 'hanging out' in certain areas. More garages or parking facilities in our area (northleaze flats) by the flats, and large vans banned as they tend to park on the pavement (unless they are working in the area)

Why use the Park & Ride if you live in LA? Surely it would be better to walk, use a bus or ride a bike - otherwise you are just adding to the congestion Public transport must & needs to be fully addressed before other road calming/speed restrictions are put in place The Mercury is a very important part of communication as an addition to the village Newsletter Welcoming new residents - I don't know how this would work as we moved in last August and haven't seen any publicity for such events. I would also be concerned that there appears to be much resentment to the new houses (and their occupiers) from older residents The health centre seems to be overwhelmed and it can tke time to get an appointment. Is it big enough to cope with the new influx of residents? The use of the car park for dropping off children for the schjool needs to be monitored, most parents still drop off in Copford Lane. Poor lighting at Co-op car park discourages my wife to shop there - its unsafe.

It would be very useful to have a few more shops such as fruit & veg or butchers. It would save on using the car to go elsewhere, also I am sure older people would find this very convenient.
tagged with: shops

it would be wonderful to see LA takins more of an innovative and creative steer to thinking about, and doing something, reducing waste and employing alternative sources of energy. relying on the mercury as the main means of advertising events is problematic. some of us have no delivery and many of us receive delivery 2/3 days late. would have like, in the environmental section of this questionnaire, a section about overhanging and too tall trees and bushes causing distress to neighbours in terms of lost light and continual dropping of leaves and debris eg boundaries betweeen Rigdeway and Chestnut Roads and Northleaze/Westwood Gardens. Would love to see the village retail opportunities increase to include quality fresh food and veg to encourage and enable us to really shop locally.
