we are very concerned about the speed of traffic on the main road. We do not want to wait for a fatal accident before the legal speed limit is enforced. I already cycle to Bristol for work every day but there is no convenient safe route. A good safe route would make it safer for those of us who already cycle and would encourage others to do so too. The old transport plan for Bristol 5 years ago identified a sum of money (£80,000 from memory) for a cycle path from the city centre to Long AShton, but 5 years later nothing has materialised. The new transport plan, prepared jointly by Bristol City Council and North somerset Council (and others), says it will encourage cycling, but there is no mention of the Long Ashton Cycle path nor much else concrete, so I am concerned that it is just rhetoric and no real action will be taken. 2 specific issues are: a) the speed bumps in Ashton Court are dangerous for bikes. I have thought this ever since moving here and reently a colleague badly broke his arm after coming off his bike trying to negotiate them. The route through Ashton Court is an official link to the Avon Cycleway so it should be of a suitable standard for safe cycling! b) the old railway bridge over the New Cut would be ideal for a cycle route staying off the dual carriageway. However, at present, access to the bridge at both ends is very poor. Signing is not the issue regarding cycle paths: the lack of cycle paths or cycle lanes is.
