The motor car is destroying the village feel of Long Ashton by antisocial speeding and ubiquitous parking. Cars will reamin part of village life for many years to come, however schemes can be introduced to encourage walking and pedestrain safety. For example, at strategic locations and busy junctions, speed tables can be incorporated which can be designed to resemble mini town squares. The added benefit would be toincrease the village feel at many locations along the Weston/Long Ashton Road. Finance for such schemes could be sourced from housing evelopers under a s106 planning agreement. (plan provided of possible scheme for block paving/coloured tarmac from Lovelinch Gardens , past the Co-op and the Pizzeria, and up Keedwell Hill as far as the doctors' surgery; with gentle ramps to slow down traffic; and extra seating near the bus shelters outside the dentists and the Tipple.)

we are very concerned about the speed of traffic on the main road. We do not want to wait for a fatal accident before the legal speed limit is enforced. I already cycle to Bristol for work every day but there is no convenient safe route. A good safe route would make it safer for those of us who already cycle and would encourage others to do so too. The old transport plan for Bristol 5 years ago identified a sum of money (£80,000 from memory) for a cycle path from the city centre to Long AShton, but 5 years later nothing has materialised. The new transport plan, prepared jointly by Bristol City Council and North somerset Council (and others), says it will encourage cycling, but there is no mention of the Long Ashton Cycle path nor much else concrete, so I am concerned that it is just rhetoric and no real action will be taken. 2 specific issues are: a) the speed bumps in Ashton Court are dangerous for bikes. I have thought this ever since moving here and reently a colleague badly broke his arm after coming off his bike trying to negotiate them. The route through Ashton Court is an official link to the Avon Cycleway so it should be of a suitable standard for safe cycling! b) the old railway bridge over the New Cut would be ideal for a cycle route staying off the dual carriageway. However, at present, access to the bridge at both ends is very poor. Signing is not the issue regarding cycle paths: the lack of cycle paths or cycle lanes is.

I aplaud the recent decoration of the shelter by the chiildren's play area, at last youthful talent comes to the fore, but what about the bottles and cans. Why have a "zebra" crossing? If people park by it! on it! and ignore the zig zag lines and yellow lines. The answer is that we are waiting for someone to be knocked down on it. Also vans and lorrries delivery for the co-op unsighting pedestrians.

As a mother of 2 who still requires a "buggy" - I experience difficultiesin getting in and out of some of my local shops. Especially on days when I have to use a double buggy. The chaemist and Post Offcie have high steps making it difficult to get buggies in and doors open. A slope would be useful. In addition the post office layout is poor and difficult to get around with buggys and I often go to Nailsea P Officewhere space and entry to the shop is not a problem.

The weak areas in Long Ashton are the condition and facilities of most of the shops. We consider the only quality shops are the bakery and the chemist. The other shops are in poor condition unbinviting and depressing. You only have to compare these shops with any in other villages. e.g. compare our Co-op with the one in Chew Magna. Chew Magna Co-Op is always well stocked, well presented, clean and withh polite and attentive staff. the whole central area of Long Ashton need to be brought into the 21st century in order to survive. Illegal signs are also a problem. Some retail outlets just keep adding signs without applying for planning permission these do not seem to be regulated and should be. Long Ashton is a good village with many good people, we all need to ensure it does not fall into an unregulated sprawl. I actively avoid Long ashton Post Office. I go to Failand monre than helpful and cheery.

7.04 Double yelow lines Since Long Ashton has become a village of services, parking has changed from from short to medium/ long term (dentists, hairdressers estate agents beauty shops ) double yellow lines would push parking into the surrounding residential streets in the centre of the village making it difficult for residents to park and to receive visitors. Any new businesses and services should be sited away from the centre and be required to provide off street parking.

A weight restriction on the rooad and some minor traffic calming works, enough to help reduce the though traffic. Better community facilities, doctors, dentisits and other health workers out of your control but an excellent social facility are public houses, we had 4 ,now there are effectively 2 that are usable. Good pubs serving quality and affordable food are one of the better ways of integrating a community ( at no cost to that community)

Youth Club: if it is to be extended / run more frequently perhaps it could be run over 2 or 3 different sitesas those who live near the rec wouldn't want youth hanging round evert night of the week. Sufficient places in the village school A similar number of shops but more useful ones eg butchers, fish mongers, greengrocers. Cheaper bus fares , which will lead to fuller buses.

Green belt - could be relaxed in places Welcoming new residents - produce a welcome pack such as that delivered by the parish church Farmers markets should include local farmers to showcase their produce one stop shop - could that be the library and open more? the co-op site + car park should be regenerated / redeveloped could provide a new centre for this end of the village where better new fac ilites are needed to serve the new and growing population

Better local shops including a grocers/general store at the ashton court end of the village. More pushchair accessible footpaths / circular routes in the village + improved footpath up to Gatcombe Farm shop (it gets very narrow). The removal by way of ASBO etc of the marauding yobs on bicycles who break into cars and commit crime is essential. One particular family lived on the former council estate by the shops should be removed asap. This might improve things. There should be an immeadiate stop to any further building of new houses in Long Ashton.

2.03 & 2.05 Traffic calming measures are a waste, roadside parking works just as well. 3.08 & 3.11 The quality and service of buses should not be compromised for price. 6.09 Not me or my family, but friends have. 7.04 More double yellow lines will create inconsiderate parking. 9.01 I would use a general website, but not specifically Long Ashton. 9.03 I do not agree that more local jobs would reduce traffic. 10.05 A warden/guard does not need to be stationed, just more visible. 11.12 Whilst a seating area would be nice, on its own it would be a waste. 11.13 Addtional changing facilities would be required. More needs to be done to improve rush hour traffic flow out of the village. In particular, the Bristol end of the village where traffic passing the Dovecote feeds onto the bypass.

Long Ashton is in need of a Medical/Health Centre, it is ridiculous to have the out of hours medical centre located in Weston-Super-Mare. Re Junior Moto-cross, 2-stroke engines are very noisy and any track would have to be loacted a long, long way away. It would also attract people from outside this area. Public transport would be used if the price was sensible.

I feel very strongly about retaining the existing green belt areas and I would strongly oppose Long Ashton being part of Bristol. I think that it would be better to have more intensive housing which is well designed and modern and save the green belt areas.

7.04 There are clearly section of the main road where double yellow lines are necessary, but they should be used with single yellow lines with constraints on parking at specific times (8.00am to 10.00am and 4.00pm to 6.00pm?). Traffic calming speed indicators would act as a reminder to those driving excessively fast. They would also be useful in particular "rat runs". Parking is not usually a problem at off peak times, therefore requires minimal use of double yellow lines. Currently the use of double yellow lines in Long Ashton seems to be inconsistant. Has their placing been decided by experienced road traffic engineers, or by parish councillors and residents who do not want parking adjacent to their property? An important factor is that parking restrictions should not, as far as possible, prejudice the running of local businesses. The lighting along the main road is largely lights hung on electricity poles. This does not satisfy the criteria that developers would have to adhere to. Is this not a safety worry? 11.09 Does not Gatcombe farm sell all produce available at a Farmers Market? 11.15 There are already many areas for dog walking. They should however be banned from sports field. 11.16 Should be intergrated with sports field and seating area. 11.22 & 11.23 These should be combined.

Cox's Lane if frequently obstructed by brambles and nettles during the summer months. They are sometimes cut back, but need treatment with herbicide. The road surface of Long Ashton road (esp between Theynes Croft and the Angel) is deteriorating badly, it is especially dangerous for cyclists. It needs resurfacing, although it is not possible to do the whole stretch, maybe the worst parts could be repaired. What happened to the pond promised by the new estate developers? The population of the village is increasing, what are the chances of the return of a newsagents and butchers/delicatessen?

In relation to the suggestion for Glebe Road (2.07), I think this is short sighted and does not consider those of us living in Yanley Lane. My suggestion is to close Yanley Lane above the last house in the rush hour periods to achieve the same objectives. Additional suggestions include: Traffic calming measures in Yanley Lane where housing is located. Given the future residential pressures the green belt retention is very important. Given the comprehensiveness of the questionnaire, I was surprised there wasn't more questions on the future expansion of Bristol as formulated in plans associated with the Regional Spatial Strategy.

Concerned about traffic and speeding esp. on main road. Consider traffic calming measures at all entrances of village plus speed warning signs, cameras etc. but NOT speed bumps. Discourage lorries but SatNav is to blame here. Heavy plant for new development should avoid rush hour which it does not at present. Yellow lines not the answer - it clears the road and encourages speeding. How about zebra crossing near post-office? Availability of medical facilities needs reviewing especially in light of preventative medicine and wellbeing clinics being encourages. Keep the Greenbelt! S106 agreements bring little advantage and more grief than bebefit. Need to be stronger on large-scale developments.

There should be double yellow lines on the road between Lampton Rd and Wild Country Lane, had near accident. Also cars parked at entrance to Lampton Rd and Fenshurst Gardens junction, I had a near accident.
tagged with: double yellow lines   parked cars

2.03: The reason we think traffic calming is not a good idea is because of District and Planning decisions to allow extra housing extensions etc and reduce road widths, which puts extra cars on the road. People do not use their garages or drive-ways. An intergrated system of speed cameras would be more effective for reducing speeds and would allow for monitering habitual parkers of blocking roads. 8.05: We were told when the 'Birdwell' estate was built that the front wall should only be for small plants. Now we have large overhanging bushes especially in parts of Fenshurst Gardens and Bradville Gardens, making walking on the pavements difficult. This also blocks the view when driving. There are also similar situations on the main road. Large commercial vehicles parked in residential streets - often on the pavement. No one seems to be interested. Maybe an evening Police patrol would be a good idea.

Long Ashton must definitiely remain administratively separate from Bristol. Not to do so would be the end of the green belt around Long Ashton. I also prefer the services offered by North Somerset. Secondly, parking on the main road is becoming a serious issue; in particular on the road outside Church House and the opposite side of the road because people are too lazy to walk from the new car park. A definite area for double yellow lines. Another area is the main road outside the new houses on the research station land. Again yellow lines nedded and this should be a problem for the developers to sort out. I trust they are going to resurface the road there once the houses are built.
tagged with: green belt   main road   parking

Action to be taken regarding the parking on Weston Road within the new developments - it seems only a matter of time before an accident is caused by people attemting to overtake parked cars on blind bends. There should be double yellow lines along both sides of this part of the road. parking on Fenhurst Gardens needs to be regulated. Most cars park on the left hand side, but the occasional car is left on the opposite side causing an obstruction. Whilst most cars can slowly negiotiate around these obstacles, it could be fatal if an emergency vehicle needed to get through. A double yellow line painted down one side would solve this problem.

It seems there are plenty of older persons clubs. To try to meet people i volunteered to be the secretary for the mother's union, however I was told by the lady taking the applications telephone call that as I was not C of E and not baptised I could not join! She then went on to ask me for new ideas to encourage yound people?? This is an example of old fashioned standards and surely for this group it would be an idea to encourage 'mothers' from all backgrounds. Also for yound people the more sporting activities the better. Could parents who are skilled at an activity offer to help run a club?

A delicatessen, something like "Cullens" - a chain in London area, would be an attractive quality foodshop. Too much on-street parking which narrows the main road around new houses on research station site. This area should have double yellow lines.

Traffic claming measures are our main concern. Overhanging trees, ivy, etc is of great concern, residents need to be aware of this! A local shop that doesn't just sell fast food would be great, sourcing locally grown food, ideally a farmers market. We would not have to travel to supermarkets which would be a good thing for the community.

A community health and leisure community centre! The existing doctor's surgery is too small and an ever increasing appointment time scale is pushing people into walk in health centres such as the one in Knowle, Bristol. There is no direct bus service for these centres and this is problematic for people who don't have transport - mainly the elderly. It's about time that North Somerset council tax payers were rewarded with a health centre of its own. a combined health and fitness centre with a community cafe is a move in the right direction. It would become the main hub for social interaction which is lacking. At present Long Ashton is gradually losing its community spirit. People now have home entertainment centres, the internet and xbox games - people need to invest in people! The elderly could benefit from the prospect of cheap meals at the community cafe, catch up on friendship - this will help against the fright of illness such as mental depression - and thus build confidence for the future. Children would benefit from leisure and health activities in developing social and communication skills and self esteem. Overall investment in youth and the elderly, health and fitness for all is essential for a positive outlook in life and for the future of the village. Let's not have a tumble-weed village!

traffic calming on the main road continuation of cylce path past new school towards Bristol less / no dog mess no more new houses Long Ashton to remain separated from Bristol less nuisance behaviour more recylcing e.g. plastic less large gardens / plots of land going for new houses.

One big comment. Since the new built houses a lot of cars and vans park on the right hand side entering Long Ashton from Combe Back. Not enough room at times for two car to pass should be made to park around the back (double yellow lines please).

Question 2.07 is puzzling - is it to make the flow of traffic faster? Large lorries, road repairs, etc are intimidatory for elderly people, mothers with prams and families using the pavements, which are, in the most part, inadequate. Mothers with prams and children often have to get onto the road to avoid 'road repair' signs or lorries or cars parked half on the pavement. No cars should be parked for long periods, day or night, on the roads. No cars should obstruct thep avements at any time. Question 7.03 Many elderly people live alone with companion animals and must receive consideration. Lowering the speed limit should be considered.

1. Something should be done about the volume of traffic through village in the village. At times it is impossible to get out of side raods to go to either end of the village. 2. Too many heavy lorries are using the LA/Weston Rd as a bye pass from the LA Bye pass. Perhaps the LA bye pass needs broadening into a dual carriageway to relieve congestion. 3. The airport has been extended enough. I object to hearing planes landing / taking off or even revving up at the end of runways in my sitting room as well as planes over my roof at night.

I cannot understand why the speed of cars through Long Ashton is a major safety problem. The real danger lies in the use of the main road as a car park, particularly at the West end of the village. Contrary to planning permission, residents of the new houses have opened the wall to obtain access to cars parked on the main road. The rsult is a long line of vans or cars parked on the left side of a left hand cuirve. When driving out of the village one has to move out to the wrong side of the road to see if a car is coming towards you. The length of the parked vehicles (I have seen as many as ten) means that sometimes there is a long wait in a dangerous situation for the offside of the road to be clear of other vehicles. This is a very real problem to bus drivers whose vehicles are slower off the mark and need longer to reach safety. It is only a matter of time before a serious accident occurs. Provision of double yellow lines on this stretch of the road is urgently needed. This will not be a problem to the owners of the cars since each ne house has parking space. In any case the matter calls for attention because original planning permission was not given for pedestrain access through the boundary wall.

I would love to see a swimming pool in Long Ashton itself and an area and a pool to encourage wilflife; walks for people as well as being a small peaceful area and in the village.

it would be helpful if the park and ride bus called nearer to the railway station (Temple Meads). Broken pavements around the Co-op are now dangerous. Communications to people as to how to join in many of the clubs needs to be brought together and not just in the centre of the village. Why is the Roman site at Gtacombe not on the village map as you leave the village? Good luck.

2.03 what are main routes? 7.03 This is not an issue inthe village in general owing to the dog mess bins which brought about a huge improvement. But we are told it is a huge problem on the rec. Why hasn't the Parish Council / Comm centre banned dogs and used powers in existence to enforce ban. 7.04 no point in having more yellow lines unless those in existence are enforced. 7.07 Where will parking be limited and who will enforce it? 8.04 Public footpaths in the countryside do not need better surfacing 9.02 It needs modernising and more appealiung to use if it is to survive 9.03 Many of the existing businesses are run / manned by people from outside the village e.g. hairdressers, dental surgeries, and this trend is likely in new ones. The new office blocks in wild country lane will be driven to. 11.16 use community centre 11.22 what about recent purpose built youth room

Traffic flow in and around LA like many other areas is greatly hindered by om road parking. Double yellow lines arfe not but could be an advantage if used with care. it is now common to find cars parked on or very close to corners & junctions so creating real dangers to drivers and pedestians. In answering the questionnaire I have taken some care in not askingfor expensive options since the communityy charge is already too great and money is limited. Although not a parish problem directly I would suggest that many of our local roads are in a very poor state of maintenance

As a single person of 64, many of the issues do not concern me directly. Long Ashton may be better admininstered from Bristol, who may view LA as one of its vital green areas. Disappointed by infrequent bus service. Some buses which go down the bypass could go through the village. Minibus to park and ride would be useful. Some pavements narrow, but no space to widen. Would support local employment for local people. Nothing seems to happen from Neighbourhood Watch now, although there were meetings and leaflets to begin with. Strongly in favour of facilities for youngsters. Could the traffic lights at the Park and Ride be turned off when the P&R was not running.

Street lighting could be improved on the main road. Green belt is very important at the Bristol end. Traffic calming is needed at both ends of the main road. The Bus times could be enclosed in the village newsletter. The paving by the coop and pizza shop is appalling. People are parking by thenew houses on the main road, this is going to cause an accident. Flowers/planting in front of the Bristish Legion would be good. Recycling bins for plastics would be better than nothing.

Would like safe cycle routes into City centre or alternatively David Lloyd Centre. Use schools for adult learning and other activities such as dancing/keep fit Need to attract more people to the bowling facility

Suggest Double yellow lines on both sides of road on sharp bend near top of Glebe Road because of constant hazard of parked cars.

Questionnaire flawey as no costings. People always want more but want someone else to pay.

With schools and village expanding, priority should be to provide activities/ammenities for youth. Junior football club with facilities for training and playing in the village would increase awareness and provide more community spirit. Need a couple of mini soccor pitches.

A lot of these things/amenities are very desirable but cost money! Facilities for the young people must come first. Noise from building sites is a nuisance

Improve traffic flow through village in rush-hour. Extend Park & Ride to at least 8pm on all days. Improve traffic safety on blind bent driving down Providence Lane. Re-cycling expanded to plastics but also cardboard of all types. Turn Left sign needed going up Clarken Combe to indicate turning to Providence Lane/Long Ashton.

top priority should be traffic calming. we live on main road and traffic speed increasing, will get worse with new developments. flashing speed monitors needd to warn drivers + camera: can we have calming system like Barrow Gurney? do we have to wait for accident before Council takes action/ Speed ramps?

1 The play area by Birdwell School equipped with football nets and play equipment. The children this side of the village have nothing. 2 Stop parents driving into Hollis Close to pick up children from school or nursery. 3 More police. 4 Keeds Hall kept cleaner and the toilets, the place is a mess. 5 More shops e.g supermarket. Stop the hairdressers and estate agents, we have enough 6 Senior school built on the Research Station Land.

I think the pavements are safe anyway.

Shops area (Co-op) needs updating. Car park need lighting and tidying up. Parking on Weston Rd is dangerous, especially near zebra crossing. I feel vulnerable on my bicylce due to speeding cars - particularly on Wild Country Lane. Speed camera should be there and at Barrow Gurney as people use it as a rat run to the airport. Kids in the village need places to go and thing to do as they can cause a problem on streets. I feel intimidated at times walking to the shops. Iwould love to see a farmers market and allotments as I am a keen gardener.

2.07 restrict carriageway to single lane at edge of village, priority to outbound traffic, 3.08 quality of buses very poor - dirty, old 3.09 should deliver bus timetable to houses, every 15 mins service would increase useage 3.12 cycle lanes on road not safe, suggest use of pavements, need to copy examples from continent 6.03 village green in the centre- where King nursery would be ideal 8.05 improve street lighting - only 3 lights in /chestnut 7.07 parking on main road allowed in clumps which would ack like traffic calming

would like to see a fast and safe route into Bristol by bicycle, cycle way safe but too long, road quicker but riskier, would like to see allotments in LA, possibly community garden/allotment, would reduce the need to travel outside of LA for allotments, reduce car journeys, this facility would benefit young and old, intergenerational, build community, contribute to health, we need affordable public transport and housing

post office is important, next day delivery not guaranteed unless posted before 12pm, needs modernising inside, I would need 2 buses to get to work, speed and amount of traffic concerns, plus parking outside Toyota garage/top of Glebe road, makes access in and out of road difficult, parking also a problem along the Weston road where they are developing the old Research station

1. Any ways to decrease traffic flow in and out of the village at peak times. 2. Increase village "feel". 3. Decrease loutish behaviour. 4. More businesses to create jobs within the village (decreases traffic) 5. More facilities for older and younger members of the community. 6. Double yellow lines throughout Long Ashton/Weston Road. 7. Allotments great idea - more rural feel. 8. Better policing, especially for the Govers (Off-licence). 9. Put hold on building new homes as village cannot cope. 10. Must keep weekly refuse collection.

One very important mention would be for double yellow lines to be placed at the old research station / Wild County Lane end of the village on both sides of the road to stop all the parking of vehicles belonging one must assume to people who have bought houses on the new estate. Surely houses of this nature have garages, why not use them? Also for Wimpey to make access available for the owners of the houses purchased on the Weston Road just past Lampton Road to be able to use land at the back of these properties to put their vehicles of the road (which is a nightmare for anyone coming out of Lampton Road turning towards Weston). I know there is plenty of garden space to the rear of these houses enough to build a parking area in each property. I have left a few unanswered questions due to unsure feelings.

Simply that there is much here about which I know nothing - would have liked more "don't know" boxes as often my opinion will not be qualified. However any extra facilities will always require a budget for repairs after vandalism. This is a key factor in any spending decisions.

Proper health centre. This would also ease congestion at the bottom of Keedwell Hill. Doctors not managing now, what happens when all houses are filled? People shop outside village as there is no out of hours cash point except Co-op which charges. No banking facilities within the village. No extra police presence has been noticed; needed to call on various events eg football club, youth club, to be more visibile evenings. Around Co-op and village hall areas. Perhaps a walkabout to be more noticable evenings.

Important to progress - extend services/housing but maintain a village environment. Parking on main road increasing problem - new housing has changed feel of the village. We do need traffic calming but through residents taking pride in the village, not signs or speed cameras as this will just encourage vandalism and spoil the feel of environment.

AS a member of Long Ashton Bowling Club I find it disgusting that we have to clear the bowling green of Dogs' mess which has been regularly thrown over for the past years. Other damage has been caused, such as burning the hedge between the green and football fiels and the net as a protective measure has been torn down fairly regularly. Just a small bunch of young people are a nuisance and we have no power to control them. In fact, we dare not antagonise them or we get more aggro.
